Mi línea de investigación aborda el estudio de los patrones, tasas y mecanismos de cambio vegetacional y climático durante el Cuaternario (últimos 2 millones de años). Para ello analizo restos fósiles de plantas y carbones, los sedimentos en los cuales éstos se encuentran y los contextos espaciales en los cuales se ubican los sitios de estudio. Esta aproximación nos permite examinar procesos de cambio vegetacional a escalas temporales dentro del rango de décadas hasta decenas de milenios, para así comprender patrones biogeográficos actuales y la evolución paleoambiental de nuestras áreas de estudio. Junto a mis estudiantes y colaboradores estamos trabajando en Patagonia Norte y Sur a objeto de entender el contexto ambiental (climático y no climático) en el cual han ocurrido las profundas transformaciones biológicas asociadas al último ciclo glacial-interglacial. Mediante la evaluación de las similitudes y diferencias con registros similares podemos establecer comparaciones regionales, continentales, intra e interhemisféricas, lo cual nos permite aportar al entendimiento de las causas y consecuencias de cambios climáticos globales en el pasado. Mi area de estudio se centra en Patagonia occidental. Proyectos en marcha incluyen áreas tales como la Región de los Lagos del sur de Chile (Patagonia Norte), Magallanes (Patagonia Sur) y estamos iniciando un programa de investigación en las islas Shetland del sur.
